The process of files getting damaged caused by some hardware or software failure is known as data corruption and this is among the main problems which web hosting companies face since the larger a hard disk is and the more data is kept on it, the much more likely it is for data to become corrupted. You'll find different fail-safes, but often the information becomes corrupted silently, so neither the file system, nor the administrators detect anything. Because of this, a bad file will be handled as a regular one and if the hard disk is part of a RAID, that file will be copied on all other drives. In principle, this is for redundancy, but in practice the damage will be even worse. When a given file gets corrupted, it will be partly or fully unreadable, therefore a text file will no longer be readable, an image file will present a random mix of colors if it opens at all and an archive will be impossible to unpack, so you risk losing your site content. Although the most widely used server file systems feature various checks, they quite often fail to discover a problem early enough or require a long time period in order to check all of the files and the server will not be functional in the meantime.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Shared Website Hosting
The integrity of the data which you upload to your new shared website hosting
account will be guaranteed by the ZFS file system which we work with on our cloud platform. The majority of hosting providers, like our firm, use multiple HDDs to keep content and because the drives work in a RAID, exactly the same info is synchronized between the drives all of the time. In case a file on a drive is damaged for whatever reason, yet, it is very likely that it will be reproduced on the other drives because other file systems do not feature special checks for this. In contrast to them, ZFS applies a digital fingerprint, or a checksum, for every file. If a file gets damaged, its checksum will not match what ZFS has as a record for it, therefore the damaged copy shall be swapped with a good one from another hard disk. Since this happens right away, there is no risk for any of your files to ever get damaged.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Hosting
If you obtain one of our semi-dedicated hosting
plans, you will not need to worry about silent data corruption because we use ZFS - an advanced file system that checks all files in real time. Whenever you upload a file to your web hosting account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. The file will be synchronized between several SSD drives for redundancy, so if one drive fails, the other ones will take over. ZFS compares the checksum of all the copies on the different drives and in case it detects a corrupted copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from a different drive. This happens in real time, so there will be no danger for any part of your content at any moment. In contrast, all the other file systems perform checks only after a system breakdown, but since they don't use anything similar to the checksums that ZFS uses, they can't detect silently corrupted files, so a corrupted copy could be replicated on the remaining disks as well and you can lose crucial information. Because this is not the case with ZFS, we're able to warrant the integrity of each file you upload no matter what.
